"People should not worry so much about what they should do; rather about what they should be. If we and our ways are good, then what we do will be radiant.  If we are just, then our works will be just.  We should not expect to be able to ground sanctity in what we do, but on what we are, for it is not works which sanctify us, but we who sanctify our works.  However holy things we do, they still do not make us holy in so far as they are things done, but, in so far as we are holy and possess being, to that extent we make our deeds holy, whether they be eating, sleeping, waking or whatever.  Nothing comes of the deeds of those people who lack true being, whatever it is that they do.  And so, take note, all our effort should be aimed at being good, and not much at what we are doing or the manner of our doing, but at the ground of our witness."

Meister Eckhart.  Talks of Instruction. Deutsche Werk, (Stuttgart, 1936) v, 197 f.
