What We Offer PDF Print E-mail

The Catherine of Siena Institute offers workshops to help lay Catholics discern their spiritual gifts and their calls from God. We provide training and seminars in evangelization and adult faith formation to lay and ordained leaders in the Church at the parish and diocesan level. Two of our best known programs are Making Disciples and the Called and Gifted Workshop.

Making Disciples
Making Disciples is a seminar that trains parish leaders to fostering the awakening of personal faith in Christ and intentional discipleship. The evangelizing awareness and skills learned in MD can be applied to almost any kind of ministry situation and used with family, friends, and co-workers.  Making Disciples is available in a 5 day seminar or a two weekend format with “homework” between sessions.

Making Disciples is available in a 5 day format (Sunday at 6pm through Thursday at noon) or a two weekend format (Thursday at 6pm through Saturday at 3pm).  The two weekends are held approximately 2 months apart with practical "homework" in between.

Called & Gifted Workshop
The Called & Gifted Discernment Process is our best known offering and has been used in the formation of over 55,000 lay, ordained, and religious Catholics all over the world.

Just as God has given us our mission in baptism and confirmation, so also does Christ give us the tools or gifts by which we can effectively accomplish that mission. The Church calls these gifts of the Holy Spirit that Christians are given for the sake of others "charisms". Discerning our charisms is an important first step to discerning God's call for our life and participation in the Church’s mission of evangelization and facilitates the discernment of all vocations: ecclesial and secular.  These gifts of the Holy Spirit are both clues as to the nature of the mission for which God is preparing us and tools with which to successfully carry out our mission.

In addition to the standard parish workshop which is available in both English and Spanish, the Institute has versions of theCalled & Gifted Workshop adapted for parish and diocesan staff, Catholic school teachers, DREs and catechists, diocesan priests, seminarians, religious congregations, and young adults.

Discernment
We train priests, seminarians, and parish and diocesan leaders at all levels to facilitate the discernment of charisms and personal call at the parish and to create a Catholic culture of discernment where it is “normal” for many Catholic adults to be asking “What is God calling me to do with my life?”

Evangelization
We offer theologically grounded, practical, and cutting edge training in evangelization skills which can be used in almost any ministry setting and in relationship with family and friends.

Social Teaching/Faith & Work

Barbara J. Elliott offers a new seminar to spark the imagination of people seeking to live their faith with authenticity.   While many people see their faith life and their life at work as two separate compartments that have nothing to do with each other, she examines the teaching of the Church and finds that we are called to live in a unity of spirit: life as one fabric, with our soul rightly related to God and man, and our actions infused by faith. Work was not punishment from God, but rather an invitation to participate in his Creation by ordering our part of the garden with him.

This workshop offers the fruit of many interviews with men and women in a wide array of professions throughout the country who have committed their time and their talent to the service of God and others.  The examples of what ordinary people are doing with extraordinary effect gives striking evidence of God at work around us.  These stories show a dimension of work as a co-creative act through which we can honor God.  Honest work done with excellence can sanctify us, while sanctifying others we touch through it.

For parishes which have already completed the Called and Gifted Workshop on discerning spiritual gifts, this one-day “Faith at Work” seminar is an excellent follow-up to present real-life applications of charisms.  Based on true stories of people living their charisms now, it provides a wide array of real possibilities to inspire people to take their gifts into the world around them — at work, at home, and in the community.

For parishes which have not yet embarked on discernment of charisms, this seminar can begin with  “An Introduction to Spiritual Gifts” on Friday evening from 7 to 9 and continue with “Faith at Work” on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.    To schedule, email:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. When the Canadian government established a series of entomological laboratories during the 1910s, crop protection was a domain where provincial governments were already busy providing technical support to local agricultural associations. The establishment of regional laboratories resulted from the adoption of the Destructive Insect and Pest Act in 1910, legislation that portrayed insect outbreaks as an interprovincial or an international problem under federal jurisdiction. The natural order conceptualized by federal scientists and legalized by the Canadian Parliament initiated a process of centralization. As the knowledge produced by the federal scientists reinforced representation of natural phenomena that legitimated their involvement across the national territory, the federal government concurrently achieved a political order by which it exerted its power over both nature and nation.
